"I wish I was more attractive, or smarter, or richer, etc., etc." Sometimes during our relationship, I may have bemoaned my luck or lack of it, and wished that somehow many circumstances of my life could have been different.
Even now, as I look at our relationship, I'm tempted to say "if only my SO wasn't so such-and-such". I can use the same phrase with my own characteristics, my job, my financial situation, and many other things.
Yet, how many people in this world can say they have perfect circumstances? And if my happiness depends on my circumstances, how do I explain the inspirational lives as such people as Helen Keller, wheelchair athlete Rick Hansen, and Matin Luther King Jr.?
While there are many things in my life I have the power to change, many others are impossible to change, including my past. Once I stop depending on circumstances to make me happy, and decide to be as happy as I can no matter what the circumstances, I may be surprised to see wonderful changes happen in our relationship, simply because of my improved attitude.

Just for Today
Today I'll take a careful look at what I would like different in my life, and decide what things are worth changing, that can be changed. Whatever is left, I'll change the most important thing I can about them: my attitude. My happiness is too important to let it depend on circumstance.

God grant me the serenity
To accept those things I cannot change
The courage to change the things I can
And the wisdom to know the difference.
